Chapter 7

ANNA GIGGLED AS SHE drove home later that week, her phone on speaker. “Ash, I wish you could’ve been there yesterday. The cakes we tasted were to die for. Sinful. I swear, I almost orgasmed on the spot.”

She could hear her friend choking back laughter on the other end of the line. “Orgasmic cakes? Now that is impressive. Please tell me that’s the one you picked for your wedding.”

“Of course,” Anna said, biting back a smile. “Wasn’t that obvious from my description?”

“I wonder what the guests will think,” Ashleigh joked. “Don’t the bride and groom get the first taste? Sounds like it will be quite a show.”

“That’s why you love me,” Anna said in a sing-song voice. “Think of how boring life would be if I wasn’t around. Maybe it’s the pregnancy hormones making me crazy.” She flicked on her turn signal and got in the right lane, exiting onto the street that led to their neighborhood. Jett had a huge, sprawling property that backed up to the woods. The perimeter was secured by a fence and surveillance cameras, along with a gated entry, so it was private and safe. It would be perfect for their wedding day.

“I hope you leave that bakery a fabulous review. Maybe I will too after your wedding,” Ashleigh said.

“I’m telling you, it was amazing. I selected the design of the cake, too. It’ll be a white cake of course, but I want some deep red flowers on top. It’ll be Christmassy enough to match the décor but still look like a wedding cake. I’m going to have our landscaping guys put up thousands of little twinkling lights out back—Christmas lights. They’ll have to do some of that in advance, but I’m telling Jett it’s just more decorations for the holidays. I’m always extravagant and over-the-top, so he won’t think anything of it.”

She heard Ashleigh’s huff of laughter. “Aside from the lights you’re putting up in the backyard, Jett seriously has no idea what’s going on?”

“He thinks I’m planning some big Christmas surprise,” Anna admitted. “A gift or something. He knows something is up but has absolutely no idea about the wedding. The extra decorating doesn’t even faze him. Did I tell you I strung lights in his office at work?”

“At Shadow Security? That must be something else.”

“I think he secretly loves it. No one ever doted on him before. He’s gruff and no-nonsense. All business. That’s why he has me,” Anna said confidently. “We balance each other out.”

“That you do. We need someone to bring you back down to earth sometimes,” Ashleigh teased. “You moved out of the city, so that’s Jett’s job now.”

“Ha. The man doesn’t mind it one bit.”

“Not at all. He’s smitten with you. I was surprised last week when I saw your text about the wedding,” Ashleigh admitted. “It’s just like you to pull off something like this though. Impulsive and crazy but kind of practical in its own way, too. Check that wedding off your list.”

“Exactly, girl. We’ve put it off for a year already.
